And what intimacies can be read back through the stages of separation between market and mine from which our geomaterialized fetishes recur? Images in the artworks are from diagrams of industrial aluminium and copper production, scenes from stockbrokers at the London Metal Exchange, fieldwork photographs of aluminium production, and hand gestures taken from archival photographs of labourers of metal industry during WWII. We travelled by foot, coach and boat through the largest globalised shipping and logistics hub in Europe. We explored pollution and waste processing at the Maasvlakte beach, and wandered through terminals handling cargo, dry bulk and petrochemicals. We engaged with the site with audio recorders, notes and shared discussion in order to learn more about how our resources circulate, and the political and environmental costs of globalisation. The splintering noise might echo water flowing inside a home, heard through hush sounds behind the sofa. shadow circuits traces elemental flows, from the brackish salt waters running into port toxicities to the gas circulating under our feet from Mexico to Italy. These journeys reveal the hidden paths or ‘shadow geologies’ that shape everyday materials, from mining and extraction to industrial processing, shipping and domestic use. Global supply chains are rooted in a lineage of extraction that continues to place labour and environmental risk on Indigenous land and colonised regions. The work constitutes an affective and multi-scalar reach from scrap junk yards and the discarded zones of material, to a physical encounter with an arm-like gesture. Composed of tenuous and stable joins such as bolts and textile seams, the sculptures consider different forms of repairing and measuring. Featuring sites that are often out-of-sight to the public, such as a deep sea cables, the film highlights the materiality of our hyperconnected world. Through a series of rhythmic landscape images, ‘all this distance’ tends to the elemental and atmospheric, drawing out our need for control and order in different types of measuring and scientific apparatus. Two faded lovers address each other through poetic letters that entangle romance and connection with the fraught conditions of pollution and grief that come with ecological devastation. The film combines footage of the river Wandle in South London alongside a scene in which a lover/friend wakes up in a bed of water inside a dark room. The works also include details from Enclosure Acts, which privatised land in the UK, expelling people from their homes across Croydon in the 19th Century. These archives are woven with stills from recent films and iPhone photographs from the artist’s personal life, including small moments and hiking trips walking through different privatised lands. Drawing on forms of ordnance survey maps, post it notes in archival processes and the tracings of material scanned, the collages map the awkward progressions between analogue and digital research. Including the partial presence of loved ones and inchoate fragments of bodies reinvigorates the cold and bureaucratic archives of pollution and land management that mask government inefficiency.
